Google purchased Simplify Media (Isn’t that the way it always starts). Simplify Media was a company that until recently provided streaming media to devices such as the iPod Touch. The media service effectively canceled new subscriptions and was given the proper media release that with the recent purchase of their company they would no longer be accepting new subscribers but will still provide services to existing subscribers.
In effect it appears that by this Fall 2010 we will have a full fledged Google cloud to phone music service that will be in beta and start accepting open subscribers in spring 2011. The service will allow you to purchase music and then instead of storing it on your phone like you are required to on the iPhone you can stream it directly from the servers. Thanks to Google being one of the best companies in the world their will most likely be an option to download a certain number of songs to keep on your device just in case you are not in range of wifi, 3G, or the newly introduced 4G.
The service will be revolutionary because most likely it will be super efficient due to Google knowing how to push each of our individual buttons. It will also be revolutionary because with the immense power of google they will be able to recieve many contracts from recording studios and could possibly overtake the popularity of iTunes in six months.
Update: As of June 30th 2010 the servers at Simplify Media will be officially shut down and prepped for the move to Google’s control.
